Biography of Sir Thomas Sutherland
GCMG (1834-1922)

alcolm Sutherland, for many years, was the Clan Historian. He continues to write articles, now and then, for this Magazine. He has now written a short biography (about 30,000 words) of Sir Thomas Sutherland, a distinguished former member of our clan. The book is illustrated and has a Preface by The Earl Inchcape. The jacket describes the book in the following terms.
This book tells the story of a remarkable Scot who lived from 1834 to 1922. Of humble origin and with scant formal education, Thomas Sutherland, through his intellect, industry, intelligence and the sheer power of his personality, became the Chairman and Managing Director of one of Britain’s premier shipping companies (P&O) and was appointed by Queen Victoria a Knight Grand Cross of St Michael and St George (KCMG), In the course of a long career in shipping, he founded a bank (HSBC), became a Member of Parliament and was an active Director of the Suez Canal Company. He also established firm friendships with people as diverse as the Sassoons and the artist Whistler.
A copy of the book (at a special price of £12.50, postage included) may be purchased from –
